obama camps. there is one thing the obama and romney campaigns can agree on. women are a key to victory. until last week's debate, the gender gap strongly favored president obama. he had a double digit lead with women. now as the poll are tightening, the advantage has begun to disappear. one reason both sides are trying to energize their female supporters by turning to the candidates' spouses. ann romney was in rif mond yesterday. this is the first lady's second time in virginia in a month. >> i think she he will braces those values that women embrace and care about. and i think she definitely fires the women up. >> reporter: obama supporters waiting in line before the event say they trust the president to preserve their rights. >> equal pay for equal work. >> i have a daughter. it took a long time for women to gain what we have as far as rights. and it would be taking a giant step backward to vote in romney. i mean, he is against the right

for a woman to have control over her body. >> reporter: but romney supporters says reproductive rights and other social issues have not come up in her door to door campaigning. the chairman of romney's loudoun county victory effort has knocked on thousands of doors since july. >> believe it or not, different than any other election, this question has not really come up. >> reporter: she said she believes the paramount issue for women in 2012 is the economy. >> i asked them to think about where they were four years ago and how things have gone. and i just talked through, did the bailouts help you? did some of these other programs help you? did the quote/unquote shovel ready jobs help you? >> reporter: barack obama won loudoun county back in 2008. a vote that was fueled by ballots cast by suburban women. that is one reason michelle obama is here again.

traffic. news4 transportation reporter adam joins us from the navy yard metro with a look at the traffic preparations. >> reporter: rush hour meets the first nats playoff game and it could make a mess of your commute. a 1:00 start time at the ballpark and win or lose, the game and the 40,000 plus fans will likely be letting out right into the heart of rush hour. metro has been getting ready. >> we are going to be running extra trains on the green line as we do for most nationals games. we'll be running them several hours in advance of the game. >> reporter: and on the roads. >> everybody i think needs to have a game plan whether they're going to the game or not. they need to know how they're going to get home. and if there is any way to avoid this area. that's what we recommend. >> reporter: d-dot is deploying its own team of officers and crossing guards to guide drivers away from nats park after the game. >> we will have some of our traffic safety engineers, traffic signal engineers will be

with killing his estranged wife and her 11-year-old son is back in a courtroom in maryland. his name is kurtis lopez. he is charged with two murders last october. today a judge ruled against a request from his lawyers to block the testimony of a medical examiner. those lawyers say the testimony would put them in a distack, because their experts did not get a chance to do the same test. >> reporter: today a judge ordered jerry sandusky to spend what will be the rest of his life in prison. he got a 30 to 60-year prison sentence today. earlier this year, jurors found sandusky guilty of sexually abusing ten children. coming up in a few minutes, we'll hear what some of his victim had to say in court today. a stern warning from a federal judge to former d.c. council chairman kwame brown. the judge ordered him to obey a curfew and says, brown doesn't want to know what will happen if he breaks the court rules again. tom sherwood shows us what else the judge had to say to brown

and why he had to be called back to court in the first place. >> reporter: last summer, kwame brown, a former rising star, resign his chairmanship and left city politics, his career, in ruins. he was ordered back in court tuesday for failing to check in weekly before he was extended in november for felony bank fraud. at his guilty plea last summer, brown had promised to cooperate. but judge richard leon was told tuesday, brown had three times failed to check in as required. brown attempted to apologize. your apology is a little late in the game. what is your excuse, the judge that, cutting off brown. you're five weeks away from sentencing. this is not the way to position yourself. you must be extremely careful. you don't want to know what the next step is. judge leon ordered brown from now on to check in personally at the court once a week. and to adhere to a curfew from 11:00 p.m. at night until 6:30 in the morning. don't be back here until the day

buildings 20 miles away were shaken. 4,000 tons of ammunition blew up. soldiers unloaded it today at a weapons disposal site. the russian officials declared a state of emergency and evacuated three villages. now they're looking to see whether negligence is to blame. nobody was injured. but back in may, six touchdowns were killed in an explosion at a different weapon disposal site. mexico says it has proof it has taken out that country's most powerful drug lord. today mexico's navy says fingerprint tests confir the man died in a gun battle with marines on sunday. just hours after the test was taken, arld men stole his body from a funeral home. his gapping of 10,000 is said to have a hold on the drug trade near the u.s. border. tuesday had offered up to $5 million in reward money for his capture. the form he penn state coach, assistant coach, jerry sandusky, learn his fate today. a judge gave him a 30 to 60-year sentence which means he will

likely spend the rest of his life in prison. brian moore was in the courtroom and has more of what some of sandusky's victims said in court before the sentence was handed down. >> reporter: jerry sandusky left the courthouse to begin what amounts a life sentence behind bars. the form he penn state football kofi once hailed as a hero on the gridiron, now officially labeled a violent sex predator under pennsylvania law. before sentencing, sandusky delivered a rambling 50-minute statement. he choke with emotion as he talked about smiling through his pain and he declared himself a victim. repeating claim of innocence, he made in a radio statement on the eve of sentencing. >> they can treat me as a monster but they cannot take away my heart. in my heart i know i did not do these alleged disgusting acts. >> reporter: the prosecutor called sandusky's statements ridiculous. >> his statement today was a

master piece of banal self-delusion. completely untethered from reality and without any acceptance or responsibility. >> reporter: sandusky's defense team said it will appeal the conviction. >> we believe had we had the time, that we would have had an opportunity to prove jerry's innocence. >> reporter: judge john cleland called it a story of betrayal and told san does kirk abused the trust of those that trusted you. the former coach was convicted on charges of sex abuse on ten young boys he met through the second mile, his charity for underprivileged youthful three of sandusky's victims confronted him in the courtroom. one stared directly at the defendant as he said, we both know exactly what happened. you should be ashamed of yourself. another sobbed as he told the court of his abuse and his harrowing road to recovery saying, i've not by any means arrived but i've certainly left. one of the jurors said she believes justice has been served

goodbye to the worst kicker. two new voices in the maryland casino debate. today university of maryland backed the push to expand gambling in the state. >> at the same time, some redskins fans objected to the team owner's support for a new casino in prince george's county. chris gordon has both sides of the debate. >> reporter: montgomery county educators as well as business and elected leaders came to campus today to make a point. supporters of question 7 say expanded gambling will mean hundreds of millions of dollars for education. money being spent by maryland residents in the casinos of neighboring states.

>> there was a study that came out today that suggested $1.2 billion that marylanders are spending, that marylanders are spending in west virginia. >> reporter: the event took place at the university of maryland at shady grove. >> the university border reached a decision in support. the moneys coming in will be supporting education, education capital budgets. so this is important. >> reporter: we requested a response from the group opposing question 7. get the facts. vote no on 7 says just because money goes to the education trust fund doesn't mean that it will get to maryland kids. new revenues would be used for increased education funding. last week, this group of clergy and communicate activists in prince george's county said no to question 7. they don't want a casino built at national harbor. that same day, the washington

redskins went public in support of question 7. these civic and faith leaders are renouncing what they call the redskins intrusion into question 7 saying, they are concerned that it reflects an exclusive advertising and marketing deal as opposed to an interest in the well being of the community or the state. they say the nfl changed league rule this year to allow casino advertising in stadiums. the redskins play their home games at fed-ex field in landover. the latest poll shows that gambling question in maryland too close to call with 9% of the voters still undecided. so both sides will be making a big push between now and election day. in montgomery county, chris gordon, news4. a lawmaker in montgomery county wants the county to have the capacity to impose a county wide gas tax. county council president said the county tax would help pay for transportation projects,

including the purple line. he proposed it after the governor's attempt to raise the tax failed. he said one of the advantages of a county tax is that the county gets to keep all the money. in the district, some drivers have a hard time figuring out all the traffic circles. in this case, a guy named josh ritz caught it on cam raffle this is logan circle yesterday afternoon. somebody took a shortcut and drove through the circle. around the sidewalk and then back out on rhode island avenue. somebody did call the cops but we don't know what happened after that. and there he goes. cameras didn't scare off a so-called bunch of bullies at a maryland high school. they were so bold they attack a teenager right in front of a tv news crew. preston dean is a sophomore at brunswick high school in frederick county. he was suspended for fighting back against a bully.

died monday k x-b of a long heart breaking struggle for her son and her family that began when nathan was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 18. >> so he's had it for 20 something years. he lived with me for six of those years. and he was in the state hospital for a little while. and he ended up, because he was there, we got first choice of going into family services and getting him into an apartment. >> reporter: montgomery county police say they responded to the group home on tailor shop place just before 5:00 p.m. monday for a 911 call that a man later identified as nathan jones, was threatening his rule mates with a knife and a hammer. they say he was pepper sprayed when he refused to obey officers' orders. >> as is our protocol, we requested that fire rescue come. treat him. get the spray off his eyes, off

his face. fire rescue left. while officers were speaking with him waiting for a transport vehicle to arrive, they noticed that he was trouble breathing and then lost consciousness. >> reporter: the ambulance returned a second time. nathan jones died a short time later at a local hospital. investigators are awaiting an taums report to determine exactly how he died. reporting from gaithersburg, jackie benson. news 4. both presidential candidates are in ohio. president obama finished a campaign rally at the campus of ohio state university and mitt romney will be joined by chris christie at a rally in cuyahoga county. it is the last day of voter registration in ohio. a new curfew for former d.c. council chairman kwame brown in court today. a judge ordered him to obey even stricter new rules because he violated the terms of his release. brown failed to make three weekly calls to check in with the court.
